Cornelius Wine: Australia
A vast nation, with many distinct regions and styles of wine, which are finally beginning to be recognised and marketed as such. For instance a Cabernet from the Margaret River, has more in common with a decent Bordeaux, than a Cabernet from Coonawara.
This change in perception, along with a dramatic shift in the climate ( droughts, devastating bush fires ) means we are probably in the last days of the generic, bargain basement, 3 for a tenner, Aussie wine.
Stoney Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2008
A nose of intense tropical fruits and subtle gooseberry.Delicate tropical flavours with hints of grapefruit and some savoury herbal notes on a medium weighted palate.This is a beautifully balanced wine with succulent, crisp acidity. £10
Hellfire Bay Shiraz 2007
Big, brash, Western Australian red that delivers a huge quantity of juicy fruit, in a surprisingly mellow and easy going fashion. Well balanced, with a dusting of light tannin and a vibrant acidity to keep all that fruit in check. Very easy to drink. Very strong in alcohol. Dangerous Stuff. £7.60
The Pugilist Cabernet Sauvignon
Big, but elegant Australian cabernet from the cool climate region of the Limestone Coast. Everything you could want from an Aussie red; dark fruits, smoke, oomph and a mouth watering finish. Perfect with roast duck. £7
