Cornelius Wine: New Zealand

The staggering success of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, has blinded many consumers (and, it has to be said, producers) to the riches available elsewhere On the Islands. Central Otago produces some of the greatest Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy and the North Island is home to some very lovely Bordeaux style reds.
There is also a growing trend to more aromatic whites, with some fantastically crisp Riesling now available.
Yealands Estate Riesling 2008
New Zealand has so much more to offer than Sauvignon. This Riesling is a stunner. Very vibrant, very clean, with an orchard full of ripe apple and citrus fruit. The finish is crisp, zesty and dry. £9.50
Millton Chenin Blanc, New Zealand
A distinctive and moreish wine. Lime and blossom on the nose. Green apple and honey with a fair whack of cheek sucking acidity then finishing rich but dry with lemon rind. Somehow manages the balance between being big and rounded yet being satisfyingly refreshing. Leaves you reaching for the next glass. An Organic blend of Malbec, Syrah and Viognier from Gisbourne on the North Island. Medium bodied, but rather savoury with a rather complex palate of dried fruit, shoe leather and spice rack. £11
