Cornelius Wine: Iberia

The last couple of years have seen a steady growth in our sales of Iberian wine. Their appeal is fairly evident; medium weight, creamy reds packed with berry fruit. Throughout Rioja and beyond, the main constituent is Tempranillo, often blended with Grenache. Heavier, pricier, more esoteric reds can be found in regions like Priorat to the East and Ribera Del Duero to the West. Spain’s greatest white is probably Albarino from Rias Baxas, a crisp, light, zesty wine that is unbeatable with seafood.

Livor Organic Rioja 2007
Soft, medium bodied organic Rioja in the joven style. Smooth, juicy and morish with plenty of berry fruit, pepper and vanilla. The finish is lightly tannic amd very smooth. A wine so easy, it nearly drinks itself. £7.80
Martin Codax Albarino, Spain
A refreshing and moreish unoaked white from the north-western tip of Spain. Rich and citrussy and complex and clean. If your budget allows for the price it is worth every penny and more. Pale lemon in the glass, aromas of peach, ripe limes and oranges give way to a mineral and lemon mouth and a clean dry finish. Beautifully balanced. Perfect for remembering a summers day, seafood or both. Prepare to be an evangelical convert. £10
Fiesta de Azul Organic Red ,09
A complex, soft, silky beast of a wine that develops wondefully after being allowed to breathe for 20 minutes or so. Up front, sweet tight currants, herbal notes all lurking berhing a very floral nose. £6.50
Salbide Rioja '08
A fairly dense Rioja, with a definite emphasis on sweet dark fruit. A nose of black forest gateaux tempered with savoury, gamey notes. The palate has vibrant juicy raspberries with a hint of kirsch. The finish is long and very mellow. £8.50

Wild Thing Sauvignon Blanc '09
A fresh lively Sauvignon Blanc from La Mancha. A dry organic white is bursting with fruit and good acidity. A touch of Muscat gives a pronounced grapeyness to the mid palate and a slight waxy feel to the finish. £7.50
Sembro Ribera Del Duero '09
Brambly on the nose, with plenty of dark damson fruit on the palate developing into a lasting smooth and rounded satisfying finish. Rather nice £10
